Baltic Circle / Experimental Identity / 2026

Developed as part of the Experimental Identity studio at Aalto University, this project proposes a comprehensive identity concept for Baltic Circle, Helsinki’s international festival for experimental theatre and performance art. The brief required designing the concept for a dual-layer system capable of balancing two distinct roles: a permanent, multi-year organizational identity for funding partners and institutional communication, alongside an annually changing festival identity aimed at the general public.

The concept establishes a modular, responsive "scaffolding" system that functions as a stable structural foundation. The core organizational layer features bold, organically blurred typography, combining institutional clarity with soft edges that reflect the fluid, evolving nature of performance art. Within this fixed yet flexible framework, invited designers and artists can build a fresh visual language for each edition. This approach ensures Baltic Circle maintains a consistent, recognizable institutional voice while allowing complete creative freedom for every new festival year.
